Peer Leaders: The Heart of PLTL

🎓 Who Are Peer Leaders?

Peer Leaders (PLs) are exemplary students who have successfully navigated the course they are now leading. They serve as facilitators, mentors, and guides, helping current students maximize their learning experience in Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) workshops.

📚 Role & Responsibilities

Unlike traditional tutors, Peer Leaders don’t provide direct answers. Instead, they employ a Socratic approach to encourage critical thinking and problem-solving. They are trained to:

  • Facilitate workshop discussions
  • Guide students through course material
  • Foster a collaborative learning environment

🎯 Training & Development

Peer Leaders undergo rigorous training to prepare for their role:

📅 Pre-Semester Training

Before the semester begins, PLs participate in an intensive training program to familiarize themselves with PLTL pedagogy and best practices.

📈 Ongoing Weekly Training

Throughout the semester, PLs attend weekly training sessions. These sessions are dual-focused:

  1. Content Mastery: Ensuring PLs are up-to-date with course material.
  2. Pedagogical Skills: Guided by a Group Discussion Peer Leader (GDPL), these sessions help PLs refine their teaching techniques.

🤝 How They Make a Difference

Peer Leaders are more than just facilitators; they are role models, mentors, and a vital support system for students. They play a crucial role in making PLTL a transformative educational experience.
